Icelandic greats Sigur Rós will come to Prague after 14 years

March 10, 2022

Famous melancholy and experimenters, emotionally charged concert shows are talked about in superlatives, they return to Prague. The concert of Icelandic legends will take place on October 9, 2022 in Prague’s O2 universe.

The band will perform in Prague consisting of Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson (vocals, guitars), Georg “Goggi” Holm (bass guitar) and Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson (keyboards), who is returning to the band after almost ten years. The band’s name consists of the island words “victory” and “rose” and is inspired by the name of Jónsi’s sister Sigurrós, who was born a few days before the band was founded. Since its inception in 1994, the band has released a total of seven albums and has become synonymous with a spherically sounding, melancholic melody enriched post-rock. The band itself prefers the name slo-mo rock. Their debut album (Von) from 1997, which was only recently released worldwide, is a unique experimental ambient work.

The band only made a name for themselves with their second album, the masterpiece Ágætis byrjun (Good Start) from 1999. The album was originally released only in Iceland, but was released by the bright label FatCat Records, which acquired the band and released it in August 2000 in the UK. For her, Sigur Rós has earned a huge response from critics around the world, especially in America. This led to a feverish pursuit of major American publishers for the rights to their material in the states. The band eventually chose the contract that gave her the most artistic freedom. It was a contract with MCA Records. In April and May 2001, the band toured North America for the first time, and the vast majority of concerts were immediately sold out.

Video clips are an integral part of Sigur Rós’s work. The first (Svefn-g-englar) was formed in June 2000. It features members of the Perlan theater group, an Icelandic group of actors with Down syndrome who perform regularly in Iceland. One of the other clips (Untitled # 1 – Vaka) was directed by renowned Italian director and photographer Floria Sigismondi and released in February 2003. The clip gained MTV’s attention and became the best music video of 2003 at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

The band is currently working on a new studio album, which they want to follow up on the fantastic serial recordings Valtari (2012) and Kveikur (2013). In addition to a selection from the 25-year-old discography of Sigur Rós, the concert will also feature complete novelties. Sigur Rós World Tour 2022 starts in April in America.
