City of Salzburg – 70,000 flowers bring spring awakening to the city
City gardeners let Salzburg blossom
The professionals of the city gardens have their hands full this spring as well, with the annual spring planting just around the corner. In the greenhouses, spring already begins in February, where the pink Bellis, pansies and the beautiful forget-me-nots are already blooming on the long plant tables.
The young plants are delivered to the city gardens and repotted in autumn of the year. The tender little plants are carefully grown at a lower temperature of around 5 degrees Celsius. Due to the temperatures, the plants grow slowly and can now be planted out in spring when the temperatures are warmer.
“For the people of Salzburg, the beautiful plant ensembles are havens of tranquility in the middle of the city. Especially in emotionally stressful times like now, it is important to show people the beauty of nature and to cheer them up. That’s why we bring nature directly into the city for them. The employees of the city gardens do an excellent job and thus shape the appearance of the city. I would like to express my sincere thanks to them for that,” said Deputy Mayor Barbara Unterkofler, who is responsible for the department.
Most of the approximately 25,000 plants are planted in the baroque Mirabell Gardens and delight locals and guests every year. Pansies and gold paint in particular are required for the typical Mirabell garden look, of which around 10,000 are planted. Together with the 15,000 bulb plants planted in autumn, this results in a unique sea of blossoms.
Other highlights are the traffic islands distributed across the city. The roundabout at the accident hospital is particularly popular among Salzburg’s population – but not only that, but a total of 1,800 traffic islands are magnificently equipped in spring and summer.
The urban greenhouses have a total area of around 3,000 m2 also brisk business. The main delivery of the summer goods with over 100,000 flower seedlings then takes place in April.
