Average wage in Prague – 4th quarter 2021

The gross monthly wage of employees in Prague reached CZK 48,130 in the 4th quarter of 2021 and was thus the highest among the regions. The average of the republic exceeded by 19.9%. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2020, the wage increased by + 4.2% in nominal terms and decreased by 1.8% in real terms (after inflation in the Czech Republic). Wage growth was the fourth highest among the region. Inflation, which has been rising sharply since August 2021, has been down.
The average gross wage in Prague in 2021 was CZK 46,152. The nominal wage in Prague increased by + 5.3% compared to 2020. After taking into account inflation, which reached 3.8% in 2021, the average wage increased by 1.4%.
Regional picture of the distribution of the average wage in the 4th quarter of 2021 remains the same. Prague (with an average gross monthly wage of CZK 48,130) a Central Bohemian Region (CZK 40,501) exceed the Czech average (CZK 40,135) in their gross wages. Country South Moravian (CZK 39,552) a Plzeňský (CZK 38,688), with relatively high wages, have not yet reached the Czech average. The lowest wages were achieved by employees in Karlovy Vary (CZK 35,645) a Zlín Region (CZK 36,599). While the region with the highest wage (Prague) exceeds the national average of almost 20%, the region with the lowest wage (Karlovarský) has a wage 11% lower than the Czech average.

There were a total of 850.5 employees in Prague in the fourth thousand of 2021. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2020, ie the coronavirus lockdown period, the number of employees increased in the last quarter of 2021 both in Prague and in most regions. The highest growth in the number of employees was in Prague (by 20.1 thousand, ie 2.4%). More than 1% growth in the number of employees occurred in Liberec (+ 1.7 thousand persons, + 1.2%) a Central Bohemian Region (+ 4.9 thousand persons, + 1.2%). In three regions, however, the number of employees continued to decline – in Moravian-Silesian (down -1.0%), Královéhradecký (-0.3%) a Ústí nad Labem region (-0.2%).
Across the Czech Republic, the number of employees in the 4th quarter of 2021 increased by 31.1 thousand (+ 0.8%).

Figure 3 illustrates the development of average gross wages and the registered number of employees in Prague in individual quarters. Average wages in the last quarter of the year are usually higher due to the extraordinary bonuses paid at the end of the year. The number of employees decreased significantly in response to measures to combat the coronavirus epidemic in the first half of 2020, after which the number of employees increased again.

Data for 2021 and developments since 2015 are shown in the following graph. The average gross wage in Prague in 2021 was CZK 46,152, which exceeded the national average by 22%. Inflation in 2021 reached 3.8%, nominal wage growth compared to 2010 was + 5.3% in Prague. Consumer prices increased by 3.8% in 2021 compared to 2020. In real terms, wages in 2021 increased by 1.4% compared to 2020.

The registered number of employees in Prague was on average in 2021 approximately 835.8 thousand, compared to 2020 increased by 8.7 thousand persons, which in relative terms represented an increase of 1.0%. In the middle of the middle, there was a year-on-year decrease in the number of employees. Although in some regions it was not significant – for example, against South Bohemian Region – 0,1%, v Moravian-Silesian AND Karlovy Vary there was a decrease of -1.4% and -2.1%. In the second half of the regions there was stagnation (eg Olomoucký) or a slight increase in the number of employees (e.g. Central Bohemian by 1.0%).
Note:
The average gross monthly wage is the share of wage resources (incl. Overtime pay, remuneration, wage compensation, etc.) per employee per month. Therefore, it does not indicate the payment of one specific employee. The results of structural earnings statistics, where data on the earnings of individual employees are available, show that about two thirds of employees have a lower-than-average wage. The average wage is insured by the so-called working method, territorial classification is made according to the actual workplace of employees.
