Russia is closing airspace to Baltic airlines
MOSCOW – Russia closed its airspace on Sunday for flights by airlines from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Slovenia in line with punitive measures that follow Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The UK has banned Russia’s leading airline Aeroflot from flying over the UK. Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Baltics, Germany and Slovenia, meanwhile, have closed their airspace to Russian carriers.
“Airlines of these countries and / or registered in them are subject to restrictions on flights to destinations in the territory of the Russian Federation,” the Federal Aviation Agency Rosaviation said.
She added that the restrictions include transit flights through Russian airspace.
Russia announced on Saturday that it would ban flights from Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Also late on Saturday, the Austrian national carrier Austrian Airlines announced that it was canceling flights to Russia and avoiding Russian airspace for at least the next seven days.
The airline said in a statement that the decision was made “due to the evolving legal situation”.
