1:2 defeat in Geneva – SCB does not reward itself
The SCB does not reward itself
SC Bern leads at Servette after a good performance until 15 minutes before the end, but is still defeated in the end.
It would have been a big step for Bern towards definitive qualification for the pre-playoff. A victory in Geneva, while the last pursuer Ambri concedes a 2:8 in Zug. Two late goals conceded SCB but a spanner in the works. After all: SCB still has the better cards in the fight for 10th place. And despite the defeat, the Bernese were also able to take some positives from Geneva.
The way Servette initiated the turnaround in the final third was annoying from Bern’s point of view – and unfortunate: Annoying because Dominik Kahun let Joël Vermin steal the puck while going forward. Unfortunate because defender Mika Henauer then directed Tanner Richards’ cross pass into his own goal. As a result, SCB showed that they were capable of taking things, against Geneva in the high field they never fell apart. And yet he conceded the 1:2 four minutes before the end. It was a perfect shot of bugs, which hit despite the disruptive work of five backcheckers from Bern. From Bern’s point of view, all of this was not mandatory given the first 40 minutes.
The fast perfect Bernese middle third
Because some SCB observers may have rubbed their eyes after the middle third and asked: Is this really the SCB whose performances this season have so often raised so many questions and left perplexity? The Bernese only lead 1-0. But how they won that middle third wasn’t really typical of SCB.
Bern played defensively compact, almost completely stopped the Geneva offensive game, Philipp Wüthrich experienced an unexcited 20 minutes in the Bern goal. The Bernese special teams were convincing, both boxplay and powerplay, even if the latter didn’t score. The SCB was also good in the game in 5v5. He didn’t get bogged down in the build-up, became bolder with every effort and also included the defenders in the attack – which was followed by scoring: Tomas Thiry’s advance was at the origin of the opening goal, in which Vincent Praplan’s assistant was particularly noticeable: His as After a fake pass, Kahun only had to shoot into the empty goal.
All this in a single third? And that of all things with the in-form Genevans, who had recently often convinced? No, that was unexpected.
SCB expects to lay its foundations in the first third and went into the first break with an obvious 0-0 goal. The game initially took place mainly in the Bernese zone, but the SCB largely managed to keep the Genevans away from their own slot. The Servettien hardly had any good chances, with the exception of a 2-minute phase of 4v4 hockey when SCB looked disoriented. However, the Bern game had its price: The SCB, for their part, created practically no goal threat. With the security he gained, he then managed to improve significantly. He just failed to reward himself for it.
