Vote for the Pluvise sailors! Calais
For a year, the association of Friends of Old Calais has been working on the project to restore the monument intended to honor the memory of the 27 sailors who died in particularly tragic conditions during the sinking of the submarine Pluviôse on May 26, 1910.
On July 22, 1910, the national funeral of the sailors, postponed by the President of the Republic, took place in a grandiose pageantry and the government then decided to entrust the creation of a tribute monument to the sculptor Emile GUILLAUME (1867-1954) . Entitled To the sailors of Pluviôse, it was judged on June 26, 1913 in front of nearly 20,000 people. The President of the Republic, Raymond POINCARE came to relieve himself there a few days later.
This monument, present in Calais for 108 years, now requires restoration, the project of which was selected as part of the campaign “The Largest Museum of France” organized by the company ALLIANZ and the Foundation for the Safeguarding of French art.
A vote is now open online until March 10 to select the work which, among others, will be able to benefit from support of €8,000 for its restoration from Allianz France.
Obtaining this grant allows the restoration project to be carried out in the best possible conditions and to give this event all the importance it deserves.
