Meeting in Luxembourg around Moroccan Judaism

Luxembourg – The Luxembourg-Morocco circle and the Luxembourg Judaism Foundation organized, on Thursday evening, at the Luxembourg cinematheque a meeting dedicated to Moroccan Judaism, designated by the screening of the documentary “In your eyes I see my country”, by Kamal Hachkar .
This film evening around memory and history took place in the presence of the Consul General of Morocco in Liège and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Abdelkader Abidine, the director of the film, the president of the Luxembourg-Morocco circle , Amal Choury, representatives of the Luxembourg Judaism Foundation, members of the Moroccan community, particularly of the Jewish faith established in Luxembourg, as well as local socio-cultural and economic players.
Speaking on this occasion, the Consul General particularly emphasized the importance of this meeting which contributes to a better knowledge of the cultural diversity of Morocco, its age-old tolerance and its openness to other civilisations.
He highlighted the Jewish dimension which constitutes one of the essential components of Moroccan identity, evoking the many testimonies on the exemplary and secular cohabitation of Jews and Muslims in Morocco, in serenity, living together and mutual respect.
He recalled, in this context, that HM King Mohammed VI attaches great importance to issues related to interreligious dialogue, the dialogue of civilizations and cultures and the enhancement of the cultural and religious heritage of the Moroccan Jewish community.
The Royal initiatives, he underlined, were illustrated in particular by programs for the renovation and safeguarding of Jewish heritage and places of worship, including the “Slat Attia” Synagogue, a memorial house on the life of the Jewish community in Essaouira. , the restoration of “Bayt Dakira”, in the old medina of Essaouira, the Synagogue “Slat El Fassyine in Fez” listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rehabilitation of Jewish cemeteries in Morocco, or the construction in course in Fez of a Museum of Jewish Culture, which constitutes a unique initiative in the Arab-Muslim world and which is added to that of Casablanca.
The documentary film “In your eyes I see my country” tells the story of two rejects of Moroccan origin who return to Morocco in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents born in the Kingdom.
After the screening of the film, the director Kamal Hachkar answered many questions from the audience, particularly on the shooting conditions, the model that Morocco represents in terms of tolerance, openness and intercultural dialogue and the links that the younger generations maintain with their country of origin.
