UEFA Champions League final moved from St. Petersburg to Paris, Russian Formula One stage canceled
The UEFA Executive Committee decided during the 25th emergency that the Russian final of the Champions League in St. Petersburg will take place in the French capital, Paris, instead of Russia. This was the reaction of the European Football Federation to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
“UEFA would like to thank the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, for his support and devotion to the fact that the most prestigious match in European club football was postponed to France during the unprecedented crisis,” UEFA said in a statement.
It is also stated that together with the government “France fully supports the requests of many necessary parties to ensure the rescue of footballers and their families who are suffering terrible human suffering, destruction and displacement.”
President of the Russian Football Union Alexander Dyukov disagreed with the decision and called it “dictated by political reasons.”
It was also decided at the meeting that from now on Russian and Ukrainian clubs and national teams in UEFA competitions meet only in neutral venues.
On February 25, it also became known about the decision of Formula 1 to determine this Russian Grand Prix, which was to take place in Sochi on September 25, 2022. The current race in Sochi would be “impossible”, according to statements by the London organization.
“Formula 1 is watching the events with sadness, shock and a quick and peaceful solution to the current situation in Ukraine,” the Formula 1 statement said.
This became known when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that international sports federations should either postpone or choose sporting events that are currently planned in Russia or Belarus.
