The Helsinki Commission issued a statement on the attack on Ukraine
Following the recent attack on the Kremlin in Ukraine, members of the US Helsinki Commission have issued the following statement:
“We are outraged that Russia’s Vladimir Putin has decided to dramatically escalate the war against Ukraine. These are not the actions of a powerful leader, but a despot who seeks to deny Ukrainians the peace and freedom he has denied to his own people.
We demand that Russia immediately end its cruel and criminal attack and adhere to the principles of the Helsinki Final Act. We call on the whole world – including the Russian people – to stand by the people of Ukraine in this moment of darkness.
The 1975 Helsinki Final Act there was a treaty of 35 countries that prohibits signatory states from violating the “territorial integrity” of others. Russia’s attack on Ukraine is seen not only as a violation of its commitments under the Helsinki Act, but also in violation of international law, including the UN Charter.
On Thursday morning, Russian troops attacked Ukraine by land, sea and air.
“Russia fraudulently attacked our states in the morning, as Nazi Germany did during World War II,” the Ukrainian president tweeted. Volodymyr Zelenski. “Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself and not giving up its freedom no matter what Moscow thinks.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his declaration of war on Ukraine that his goal is to protect Russian citizens who have been subjected to “genocide” in Ukraine – an “unfounded accusation.” The Moscow Times.
“And to that end, we are working to demilitarize and denationalize Ukraine,” Putin said. “Russia cannot feel secure, develop and exist under the constant threat that leaves the territory of modern Ukraine”
