State road 16: the Municipality of Rimini announces the roundabout on the SS72 of San Marino
“Goodbye to the black holes of Highway 16: the works for the two roundabouts and the five underpasses that will mend the city get underway”.
This was announced by the Municipality of Rimini with a note. Among the planned interventions also the roundabout between Statale 16 and SS72 of San Marino.
“The date is March 17th. It is the day, awaited for years, in which the works for the definitive overcoming of the ‘black holes’ of the State Road 16 will begin through six important interventions that will make it possible to mend the historical fracture of the territory, compacting the city at the sea and upstream of the Adriatic.
The interventions are part of the extensive program of complementary works in favor of the territory that Autostrade per l’Italia is carrying out for the construction of the third lane of the A14, in the section that affects the municipalities of Rimini, Riccione, Coriano and Misano Adriatico. For the municipality of Rimini, 6 of the 9 total interventions are planned, for an investment of about 10 million euros: two roundabouts – with via Montescudo and the SS72 San Marino – five cycle and pedestrian underpasses – via Coriano, via della Fiera, via Covignano – and a cycle path that will make vehicular transit and sustainable mobility smoother and safer, therefore with advantages for traffic improvement and for the impact on air quality.
All the preparatory activities for the construction site have already been underway for months, starting from mid-March the activities will come to the fore, also involving traffic on the one that represents the road through which the territory is crossed. The timing for the realization of the six planned works have been studied in order to harmonize the phases of the construction sites with the management of the roads, with the aim of limiting the inevitable inconveniences that will affect the mobility of citizens. It will start on March 17, immediately after the conclusion of SIGEP, the most important trade fair in the city, which returns to welcome operators and the public in attendance after the stop due to the pandemic. “
Part: the roundabout between SS16 and via Montescudo and the cycle / pedestrian crossing of via Coriano
We will start from the ‘node’ present at the intersection between Statale 16 and via Montescudo and Coriano, where the employees of the companies appointed by Autostrade per l’Italia have been working for weeks with preparatory activities for the most important phase of the construction site.
From the 17th the works for the construction of the cycle / pedestrian underpass in March between the SS16 and via Coriano will start, an infrastructure that must reach those who travel by bike or on foot to cross the state road in full and without waiting times. To ensure the transit of flows, Autostrade per l’Italia, as a sharing in the technical table organized by the Prefecture, is creating a bypass for those coming from Riccione towards Ravenna at the intersection between Statale 16 and via Montescudo, which will be operational at least until mid-May, when the works that interfere with traffic along the state road are expected to be completed and which will continue until September, when the cycle and pedestrian underpass is expected to be delivered.
The continuation, headed by the contractor CBR, in parallel with the work in progress for the construction of the roundabout at via Montescudo, another crucial junction of the road to penetrate the city center. The completion of the works, which had already started at the beginning of the year, is scheduled for the month of December.
The second step: the roundabout between the Statale 16 and the SS72 of San Marino
The next step involves the construction of the other roundabout that will eliminate the traffic light intersection between Statale 16 and the SS72. A large infrastructure (about 110 meters in diameter) that will facilitate the connection to the center and to the consular of San Marino. In addition to the roundabout, the work includes the construction of a road underpass that completes the cycle of construction of the direct connection between Via Euterpe and Via della Repubblica and the construction of a new walkway with trepassi, able to connect the Parco della Cava with the sector residential area of via Montescudo. Finally, a new collector of the old Ausa stream will be built with a path parallel to the cycle path. The preparatory activities for the construction of the works are already in progress, but the works will come to life during the summer as regards the cycle and pedestrian underpass of Via Euterpe, during the autumn as regards the interventions on the SS16, to be completed in the second mid 2023.
The other interventions
Until the middle of next year, in parallel with the works for the construction of the two roundabouts, three other strategic interventions will be completed to strengthen and improve the network of cycle and pedestrian connections of the city between the sea and mountain areas. After the summer, work will begin for the construction of the cycle / pedestrian underpass between the SS16 and Via della Fiera, a decisive work to improve accessibility to the center for those who live and work in the urbanized areas upstream of the state road. The intervention will be completed in January 2023, when work will start on the cycle / pedestrian underpass of Via Covignano, which will be connected to the cycle path that follows the Ausa switch.
The first project to be completed, already started in these days, will be the cycle / pedestrian path of about 1.3 km which by the summer will connect the Covignano area with the area between Via Marecchiese and Via Padulli.
The commitment of the local police
The Local Police will be involved in the front line for the management of the roads that will accompany this phase of construction sites, in synergy with the other competent bodies and under the coordination of the Prefecture. For the entire duration of the works, both on the route of the SS16 and on the urban network close to the construction sites, the presence of more patrols of the Local Police will be required both in the morning and in the afternoon and, in the case of the progress of the Losse construction sites, also during the evening shift. The garrison will be assessed on the basis of the impact of the various operations on traffic, but already in this first phase the use of at least twenty agents every day is expected to cover the two shifts of service. The technical coordination table of the Prefecture, after having brought together the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, examined the possible measures to be put in place to mitigate, through effective interinstitutional action, the inconvenience to traffic.
“A long-awaited series of works, at least from the seventies onwards – comments the mayor of Rimini Jamil Sadegholvaad – which will allow for the suction of the ‘plugs’ of the road system along the state road, giving greater road fluidity to the traffic which is fundamental for accessibility and movements on the territory. Works for a connected city, more accessible and more cohesive, thus overcoming the most historic ‘fractures’: with the open interventions we have and will open in these first five months of the new administration, Rimini will once again be a compact city. The cycle and pedestrian connections with the areas above the state road also owe, perhaps, to the idea of a community in which there are neither barriers nor suburbs above all ”.
