Portugal took “very radical cyber defense measures” even before the start of the war in Ukraine
“The increase in cyberattacks is a certainty derived from war”
Portugal decided to defend cyberspace in the wake of the nations between Russia and Ukraine, which on Thursday ended up resulting in a military invasion. According to what José Tribolet, professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, told CNN Portugal, our country is taking a normal step, which has also been taken by other NATO members.
For the expert, this is a natural war, not least because “the increase in cyberattacks is a certainty of the war,” he says, knowing that there have already been several reports from natural Ukrainian intelligence services.
“Preventively, at the national level, very radical cyber defense measures have already been taken. It was not to be expected otherwise”, says José Tribolet.
Moreover, as Portugal is a member of the Atlantic Alliance, this is an action that should not be isolated, with the other Member States following the same path.
José Tribolet even remembers that there are already several countries with a fifth branch of the Armed Forces: cyberspace. The professor also notes that the greatest protection of the population, which must be the true “civilian cyber defense army”.
Contacted by CNN Portugal, the National Cybersecurity Agency, the entity responsible for the matter, did not respond.
Several informative programs were registered in the Portuguese publication in the country, namely to the Impresa group, to Vodafone or to the Parliament afterwards. The MNE was the target of an attack on Tuesday.
