Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic have issued a joint statement refusing to travel to Russia for the 2022 World Cup finals next month in the midst of the escalating crisis.
The three nations are in “Path B” together with Russia, and are competing for one of Europe’s last three places at the World Cup in Qatar next winter.
Poland will face Russia in Moscow in the first semifinal on March 24, with Sweden and the Czech Republic facing each other in Stockholm in the second match later the same day.
Depending on who wins the first semi-final, the “Path B” final on March 29 is currently slated to be held in either Moscow or Chorzow, a city in southern Poland.
However, in the light of recent political and military events, the national football associations of Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic have made it clear that they do not intend to travel to Russia, citing security concerns and urging FIFA and UEFA to come forward. with solutions.
“The football federations of Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic categorically condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” was their joint statement.
“The military escalation that we are observing is associated with serious consequences and a significant reduction in the level of security for our representations and official delegations.
“Therefore, we expect an immediate response from FIFA and UEFA and a presentation of alternative solutions for the upcoming matches.”
