Melodifestivalen 2022: Heat 4 first reactions
Yesterday, wiwi blogger Robyn got the chance to listen to the whole songs for the first time. Keep in mind that media listening sessions involve the studio versions of the competing songs being played over a video call. This is not the same as the experience of seeing the song performed live. These were her thoughts:
Anna Bergendahl – “Higher power”
“Higher Power” is a little different from Anna’s previous Melfest contribution, but it’s clearly an Anna song. “Higher power” is rich in poetic language, and the lyrics can serve as a religious story about finding God, or just someone who goes out and spends time with nature. The song has a very country sound over it and strangely enough reminds of Stefan’s “Hope”, but – it must be said – the country tone in Anna’s voice is really lovely. Musically, it’s a bit predictable, but Anna will sell it.
Little sister – “Until our days are over”
“Till Our Days Are Over” goes in a different direction than last year’s contribution “Pretender”. Strangely enough, the song sounds as if it was originally written with a reviving emo sound in mind, contrary to Little Sister’s heavier rock styles. The milder verses do not work, but once the chorus starts, things fall into place. But it still feels missing, as if there are still a few pieces missing to make a decent Melfest entry.
Malin Christin – “Too bad for you”
Malin has a gentle piano ballad that I would file under “easy listening”. But it’s the right genre for the song, a story about heartache and strength. The song is in Swedish, which may not make it most accessible to an international audience, but Malin has the potential to convey emotions with the staging.
Tenori – “La stella”
This – and I can not stress this enough – is SO EFFECT CAMP. Imagine Jacques Houdek’s “My Friend” and that Portuguese pop group that almost won the FdC 2017 and throw in a little Alcazar for good. Just all that. “La stella” is a mixture of Italian pop pieces and English disco pieces sung in an opera. I’m not normally a fan of pop, but I love all the drama in “La stella”. It will certainly be fantastic live and I would not be angry if Sweden sends an Italian pop to Turin.
Medina – “Into the fog”
This song has a great sound. I struggle a bit to come up with a genre, but in my note I have written reggaetón, Stromaes “Ta fête” and brass band drums. Medina has been around for a while and are confident artists so they should definitely be expected to give a powerful live performance. I feel like this is going to be one of the biggest moments of this week’s show.
Angelino – “The End”
This is one of the more subdued performances this week, but Angelino’s gentle ballad works. He has an emotionally expressive voice, which is well suited for a song like “The End” which is about expressing emotionally and telling a story. I feel that this will have more impact live, especially if Angelins (and the cameras) can create a sense of intimacy.
Klara Hammarström – “Run to the Hills”
“Run to the Hills” has a heavier sound than Klara’s “Beat of Broken Hearts”. It is an electro pop song with a very cool chorus that she delivers with lots of attitude. It’s a bit of an EDM sound, with a few instrumental pauses but which never outshines Klara. Although the chorus becomes quite repetitive towards the end, there is musically enough variety to keep things interesting. And yes, it feels like a future Euroclub favorite.
