PRAGUE

At a glance: What the Railway Administration will start building this year and what it postponed until next year

Sugar Mizzy February 24, 2022

The only new construction on the railway with a budget of over a billion this year will be the modifications of the line in Prague from Bubny at the Exhibition Grounds.

The Railway Administration (SŽ) will have two billion crowns less available from the state this year for repairs and maintenance than originally planned. This follows from the budget of the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure (SFDI) approved yesterday.

The daily Zdopravy.cz confirmed the approved version with a proposal submitted by the previous government. It shows that the start of some construction will be postponed until next year. At the same time, these are rather larger projects in the order of billions of crowns. Thanks to the large amount of money for projects already under construction, the only events on the railway with a budget of over a billion crowns will only be the beginning of the modernization of the Prague-Bubny – Prague-Exhibition Grounds section.

According to the approved proposal, the railway administration will have 53.4 billion crowns at its disposal. A total of 33.5 billion crowns is to come from national sources, almost 20 billion crowns from European funds. For the first time, the Railway Administration will also come from the European resources of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). In total, the SŽ has over 10 billion crowns in this budget.

The biggest cuts are in repairs and maintenance: in the autumn the state expected 16.6 billion crowns, in the end it will be 14.4 billion crowns. The budget in the area of railway operation (3.1 billion crowns) and in the volume for construction preparation (1.67 billion crowns) is unchanged. The amount of more than half a billion crowns for the preparation of high-speed lines was not reduced either.

For investments, the launch of some events will be postponed until next year at the earliest. At the same time, it is planned to move a number of buildings in 2023, which were originally supposed to begin in 2024 or later. However, it is not clear how realistic these plans are, in total, these are constructions with a budget significantly exceeding the current level of expenditure of the Railway Administration in recent years.

Already at the beginning of the year, the Railway Administration announced that it had no action on all the money. One such example is the modernization of the Chomutov – Kyjice line, where construction companies have lost time by preparing bids. Already in the autumn, according to the draft budget of the SFDI, there will be money for the construction in 2023 at the earliest.
