ALL ANTWERP: “I have a great affection for Belgian art” (Antwerp)
Every day our reporter and photographer pick a casual passer-by off the street for a chat. Want everyone has a story. And certainly in Antwerp. Today: Brecht Baert (41).
“I am an interior architect and have my own architecture office. Studio Helder, in the Provinciestraat. We do that with two. We started eleven years ago. Before that I worked in the fashion sector, for well-known Antwerp names.”
“We prefer to do as many different projects as possible with Studio Helder. For example, we have renewed the new layout of the Bijloke music center in Ghent. But we also do smaller projects for private individuals. It’s the variety that makes it great. Our style is quite sober in use of form but very colorful and there may be some humor in it. I’m constantly working on it. I’m always working but it never feels like work.”
“Of I have a dream project? I would especially like to be able to combine all my interests. So I like being able to take care of both the interior architecture and the art within a project. I have an affection for Belgian art, but often, when the budgets are there, people are out to buy non-Belgian art. Which is very strange. That’s a focus that I think is wrong. In our country we have a very cool field of both young and experienced artists. Nevertheless, 95% of our Belgian art goes abroad, if not more. I would like to sell more in my projects.” evw
