The squash championship returns to Prague. Favorites are Serme and Mekbib
After three years, the national squash championship will be created in Prague. He will use the complete domestic elite for the home title, specifically in the Hector Sport Center and the Squash Bowling Center. The championship will not take place in a glass court. “The difficult situation in the last six months has made it difficult to negotiate the possibility of organizing an event on the glass court, which was our goal and the fact that the still unknown budget for 2022, because the National Sports Agency has not yet announced subsidy programs for this year, did not help. However, we are looking forward to exciting matches and an interesting tournament, “said Tomáš Fořter, General Secretary of the Czech Squash Association.
The Czech Championships will start on Thursday, March 3. The tournament will be broadcast on the CT sport i-broadcast from Friday, matches from the quarterfinals will go with commentary. Fans of attractive racquet sports can watch the complete news with interviews with players on the association’s social networks. The event will be completely broadcast on the youtube channel.
The last national championship took place in the autumn of last year, because it was not possible to play it last spring. The new year awaits the best Czech squash player next week. The men’s first place is defended by Daniel Mekbib, who will attack his fifth title. In the women’s category, Anna Serme is a big favorite, holding 39th place in the world rankings. “Thanks to the fact that she is so high, she gets to the biggest tournaments in the world and in the first rounds she has a very good opponent against her. It is adapting to a higher level, “said Tomáš Fořter.
Serme is currently in tournaments in the USA. Mekbib traditionally flew there before the national tournament. At present, however, he has fallen in the world rankings because he has lost tournaments. He now ranks 92nd. But there are more favorites for the title. The highest Czech squash player is Martin Švec, who holds 83rd place. Jakub Solnický is six places behind him. But that’s not all – men’s squash also has a surprise last year in the form of Marek Panáček, who made it to the finals. Viktor Byrtus is also thinking about the title, Ondřej Uherka, David Zeman or Ondřej Vorlíček also want to be in front.
“In recent years before the championship, we declared that this year will be balanced, but this year it will be extremely bloated. Last year, he could not intervene in the tournament due to Martin Švec’s illness, now there are at least five candidates for the championship, “added Fořter from the squash association. This year, it will celebrate 30 years since its founding. “We plan to organize a social event at the end of the year, which will invite everyone to the development of this sport in our country. And we would also like to build our new glass court as soon as possible. It will be at the next home next year at the latest. “
