Silent emergency call – Austria launches new app
Messages
Austria complements that Protection against Violence Act. An app with a silent emergency call was announced on the initiative of the interior, justice and women’s ministries.
The app is aimed not only, but above all, at women. In 2020 alone there were 31 murders of women, many of them by (ex) partners. In addition, it is assumed that every fifth woman from the age of 15 is exposed to physical violence. From March 1st there will be a new app that can trigger a silent emergency call. The application calls the police at the touch of a button – without calling back or asking any questions.
Silent emergency call – with criticism
There is criticism from the AÖF women’s shelters. In an interview, Maria Rösslhummer, Managing Director of the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters, speaks out against the obligation to register. In addition, the mere installation of such an app could already create considerable potential for conflict.
The article image shows the app icon of the Austrian police app. There is some content on dealing with domestic violence and further information.
There are similar projects in Germany, for example Nora started last year.
