This is one incident too many, the one who pushed the city councilor to act. Following the hunting accident which claimed the life of a 25-year-old young woman in Cantal on Saturday February 19, 2022, the mayor of the village of Lherm (Haute-Garonne), Frédéric Pasian, has decided to publish a municipal decree which aims to strictly regulate the practice of hunting in his municipality.
The document in particular prohibits the use of bullets and therefore long distance rifles and buckshot.
“The mayor has long hesitated to publish the municipal decree who is very harsh on hunters, explains Brigitte Boyé, first deputy of the municipality in charge of town planning. But the accident that claimed the life of a young girl last weekend was the drop of water that broke the camel’s back “.
Two hunting accidents in the town
It must be said that the town of Lherm has not been spared from hunting accidents in recent years. In 2001, a man who strolled mountain biking took a bullet in the arm.
Last November, a drama was narrowly stopped when a bullet was found in the wall of a company building when an employee stopped a few meters away. Two incidents that have prompted the mayor to make strong decisions.
The cohabitation between local residents and hunters has become very complex in recent months, no dialogue is possible. Many inhabitants of Lherm are afraid for their children, it is no longer acceptable. It was a bullet that hit a mountain biker in 2001, we want to ban them in order to avoid this kind of accident in the future.
Friction grows
The municipal decree issued by Mayor Frédéric Pasian limits the practice of hunting in the community drastically. It will thus be forbidden to hunt in several communal plots but also in the Escoumes wood, where many families walk. Long distance rifles and the use of bullets are prohibited throughout the village.
“Our community is increasingly urbanized and friction between hunters and hikers has increased lately, adds Brigitte Boyé. We had to make this decision. The hunters have already told us that they would hunt more in our commune and that they would let the wild boars proliferate”
Contacted by Toulouse News, the president of the Lherm hunting association contented himself with a laconic response: “we have no comment to make on the subject”. In Lherm as elsewhere, the subject of hunting still divides the population.
