Caen back base of the 2024 Olympics? Sport as a promotional tool to promote a territory, is it a good idea?
Normandy has just hosted the French Women’s Football Tournament. A mini-competition organized in Le Havre and Caen won by the French team. The Ornano stadium in Caen has been the scene of three international matches. Something to give ideas to the city that will apply to host Euro 2025 matches.
It was a life-size test for the city of Caen. On the occasion of the French Women’s Football Tournament, organized in Le Havre and Caen, the Ornano stadium was the scene of three international matches. If Brazil/Finland and Netherlands/Brazil have not had great popular success, the Caen enclosure is full or almost full for the clash France/Brazil. This international meeting was also an opportunity for the city to announce its candidacy to host matches of the Women’s Euro in 2025.
This Tournoi de France was a real success. It was an opportunity to show that here, in Caen, we love sport and women’s football. This tournament was also a good way to show that we were capable of hosting major competitions. There was no better occasion than the Tournoi de France to announce that we were applying for the European Women’s Football Championship.

This Tournoi de France was also an opportunity for women’s football in Normandy to come together around international matches. The public came from the five departmental districts, most often with families.
A true international showcase, the French tournament has allowed the city of Caen to become known throughout the world and particularly on social networks or many fans and media by following the adventures of their national teams.
The Tournoi de France which has just ended is only one stage in the ambitious project of the city of Caen to make itself attractive through sport. Barely two kilometers from the Ornano stadium, the future sports hall is being built.
This setting dedicated to sports will be delivered in September 2023. Located in the continuity of the Parc des expositions and the Zénith, it will cost 40 million euros and will be able to accommodate 4,200 spectators. It will be able to accommodate many collective or individual sportsmen. Above all, it will be a tool for developing the attractiveness of the Caen region by organizing international meetings or hosting international meetings.
It is a great tool to make our territory attractive through sport. It will serve Caen clubs well on a daily basis, but it will be dedicated to sporting events. We can welcome national basketball, handball or volleyball teams. The idea is to ensure that through sport, we can shine beyond our region.

If the schedule is respected, the future sports hall in Caen will be delivered 11 months before the Paris Olympic Games, whose opening ceremony is scheduled for July 26, 2024. Caen will be an “Olympic land” says Aristide Olivier, who hopes to succeed in the territory of the city of national teams in full preparation.
