Zurich – The ZKB cable car will definitely not exist
Released
The Zurich administrative court recently ruled on the opponent of the ZKB cable car. ZKB will not proceed with the verdict.

The ZKB wanted to build a cable car over Lake Zurich for 50 to 80 million Swiss francs – as an anniversary gift.
-
The project has buried the bank after the latest court decision.
Now it is definite: no cable car will hover over Lake Zurich. As the Zürcher Kantonalbank announced on Tuesday, the judgment of the administrative court was analyzed in detail and it was decided not to build the cable car. Alternative projects will not be supported either. «We very much regret that we cannot build the cable car. We accept the verdict and will not take it to the Federal Supreme Court,” CEO Martin Scholl was quoted as saying in the statement.
In 2020, for its 150th anniversary, the ZKB wanted to have a cable car hover over Lake Zurich. However, various environmental organizations opposed the cantonal design plan “Mythenquai – Zürichhorn cable car” laid down by the Zurich building department in spring 2019. The building appeals court upheld the complaints and overturned the design plan.
«weight impact on space and environment»
On the other hand, Züri Bahn AG filed a complaint in January 2020, which the Zurich Administrative Court recently rejected. In a judgment of December 9, the administrative court came to the conclusion that the cantonal design plan was rightly rescinded.
Among other things, the project has “significant effects on space and the environment”. The cable car is located in the vicinity of the “townscape of the city of Zurich that is worthy of protection, hit a landscape protection object with Lake Zurich and appears very prominently”.
In addition, the operation could attract a large audience, which would generate significant additional traffic. In an overall view, the interests in the construction of the cable car cannot outweigh the interests in protecting the landscape, the statement continues. The judgment can still be appealed to the Federal Supreme Court.
