The first “solar cadastre” of Athens – New service from the National Observatory
The National Observatory of Athens developed the first “solar cadastre” for Athens. it is about a new service referred to in description and illustration of solar energy potentialwhich can be exploited every urban building block using photovoltaic systems on building roofs.
The service, which was made possible with the support of the European Eiffel Program aimed at highlighting the role of geographic data in the development of adaptation and measurement applications climate changeis a business information platform in order to increase the penetration of solar systems in the urban fabric. At the same time, it will contribute to the decision on energy transition offering more environmentally friendly solutions.
The technology is based on utilization of high resolution geographic datausing advanced graphic creation platforms, radiation propagation models, and supercomputer cloud architectures. It operates both climatically and in real time, with the ultimate goal of facilitating urban planning, supporting the distribution managers of the produced energy and its efficient integration in the smart electric networks.
THE total usable area It is estimated that it is able to accommodate massively scattered photovoltaics, which can deliver up to 4.3 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity to a base, which – in a hypothetical scenario of full coverage of the roofs of buildings – i.could not cover up to 49% of Athens’ total energy demand.
