Accidents The trend in the number of accidents, after having been constant and so observed since 2012020, in 201 recorded a significant increase, as did the number of injuries involved: winning the graph below, which also highlights the historical series of deaths caused by claims. In 2021, 108 accidents were recorded, which resulted in 140 injuries and 2 people lost their lives. The injury rate, which relates the injured to the number of accidents, stood at 129.63%, second only to that of 2012, if we compare the last ten years. Graph 1 – Historical series of accidents, deaths and injuries Dividing the series into two five-year periods, it is easier to observe the trend which, considered on an annual basis, could be affected by the distorting phenomenon due to the low number of observations within the San Marino area. In the five-year period 2017-2021, compared to the period 2012-2016, both road accidents (-25.5%) and injuries (-29%) decreased, lowering the consequent average injury index up to 120.56% (in previous period was 126.12%). The data relating to previous safety has significantly improved in recent years, even if the number of deaths increases, in fact, in the period 2017-2021 there were more deaths (10) than the period of deaths (6). These are small numbers for which it is difficult to identify a trend for ten mortality, even if, in recent years, there have been at least one death per year, with the exception of 2016, in which there were no fatal accidents. The percentage of accidents occurring on the “Superstrada”, compared to the total of accidents, is increasing, going from 25% to 28%, while the number of deaths in the main San Marino artery has remained unchanged with 3 deaths in each five-year period considered. By “Superstrada” we mean the 9.799Km stretch with two carriageways which includes the following roads: via Tre Settembre, via Quattro Giugno, via Cinque February, via Venticinque Marzo and via Ventotto Luglio. As a demonstration of the dangerousness of this road section, in the last five years, 2.6 accidents per km have been recorded, compared to a figure of 0.28 accidents per km on the entire San Marino road network. roads occurs through a frontal or lateral accident (Graph 2), a dynamic that affects just under 40% of the accidents occurring on San Marino roads. The proportion of accidents involving pedestrians is increasing, which involved 7.9% of accidents in the five-year period 2017-2021, while in the previous period it stood at 6.9%, as was the Tampon, a dynamic that reached 15.3% of accidents and collisions with parked vehicles, equal to 21.3% of the total. Graph 2 – Nature of accidents With the exception of correct behavior, the main circumstance of accidents on the roads of the Republic of San Marino is distracted driving; this circumstance occurred in 11.6% of accidents with deaths and injuries compared to the five-year period 2017-2021, with an increase in the previous five-year period where this case accounted for 10.3%. The second circumstance, excess speed, instead recorded a significant one, going from 14% in the 2012-2016 period to 10.1% in the last five years, as well as compliance with the rules of precedence is also decreasing, third cause of accidents, reaching 10.1% in the most recent five-year period, while in the period 2012-2016 it was 14.7%. Most of the road accidents and injuries occur in straight lines: 34.4% of accidents in the period 2017-2021 with 36.3% of the injured. Follow the curve (27.9% of accidents with 26.3% of injured) and the intersection (19.5% of accidents and 18.7% of injured). 2.9% of accidents occurred in roundabouts. As regards the, there was a strong passage of claims between the two five-year-olds taken into consideration, passing from 26.4% of accidents in the five-year period 2012-2016 and to 19.5. 2 July historically represents the month in which the most damaging accidents occur in San Marino; in both five-year periods, 15.3% of claims occurred in July. The time slot in which the greatest number of accidents occur is that of the morning, from 7 to 13 (37.3% of total accidents). The three daily peaks are recorded in the hours in which the greatest mobility of people occurs: • between 8 and 9 • between 12 and 13 • between 18 and 19 The people involved In most cases, the victim of the accident is the driver: in the period 2017-2021, 82.8% of the injured drive one of the vehicles involved (in the previous five years it was 79%), 10.8% of the injured were transported (in the previous five years was 14.9%), while 5.8% were pedestrians involved (6% in the period 2012-2016). In the period 2017-2021, most people injured in road accidents belong to the age group 0-17 years (18.4%) followed by the age groups 18-25 (16%) and 26-35 years ( 15.8%); this means that over 50% of the injured are under 36 years of age. In general, in the last five years, the proportion of male injuries is slightly higher, going from 61.6% in the five-year period 2012-2016 to 68% in the last period. Castles and roads Most of the accidents occurred in the castles of Serravalle, Borgo Maggiore and Domagnano, which in the period 2017-2021 recorded a total of 67.9% of the total accidents. All three of the aforementioned castles are affected by the presence of the highway inside them. The Castello di Fiorentino is the one that recorded the greatest proportional increase over time, going from 4.6% of accidents in the 2012-2016 period to 7.5% of accidents in the following five years. A strong duration between the two periods was recorded in the castles of Borgo Maggiore (-5% of accidents) and San Marino Città (-2.2%). Considering the entire observation period (Graph 3), it emerges that the most dangerous road of all is via Ventotto Luglio, followed by the other four sections of the “Superstrada”. In addition to the most famous road, the graph notes that the connecting roads with the highest concentration of accidents and injuries are via del Serrone, via Ca ‘dei Lunghi, via Ranco and via Sesta Gualdaria. The roads just mentioned, together with the “Superstrada”, in the last ten years have accounted for 36.9% of total accidents, 37.5% of deaths and 37.9% of injuries on the entire San Marino road network.
