Super finish! Salzburg celebrates last-minute victory
In the hit of the 20th round of the Bundesliga, Salzburg kept its nerve and only secured a 2-0 win against WAC in injury time.
Red Bull Salzburg can still win against WAC at home. In the top game of the round between the leader and the first pursuer, the Lavanttalers seemed to wrest a point from the champion before the leader struck twice in injury time. Luka Sucic in the 91st minute and Brenden Aaronson in the 95th minute ensured the league leaders deserved their 2-0 (0-0) win on Sunday. Salzburg increases the lead over the WAC to 17 points.
+++ Here are all the details about the game +++
The Wolfsbergers had not left the field as losers three times in a row in Wals-Siezenheim. For coach Robin Dutt’s team it was only the second defeat in the past eleven rounds with eight wins. Salzburg can now breathe through the dense program. Next Sunday we will continue away against LASK.
No risk – scanning at the beginning of the game
A week and a half before the meeting in the semi-finals of the ÖFB Cup in Wolfsberg (March 2), it was initially a scan that Salzburg and WAC carried out. The compactly acting Carinthians tried to prevent the combinations of the home side with forechecking, which initially did not act with final consequence.
Four days after the 1-1 draw against FC Bayern in the Champions League round of 16, coach Matthias Jaissle hardly expected any change. Junior Adamu, who came on for the injured Noah Okafor against Bayern Munich, started in attack, Antoine Bernede and Kamil Piatkowski in midfield and defence. The Wolfsbergers are missing two important players in the center. Michael Liendl had to pass after a positive corona test, Mario Leitgeb was rested due to back problems.
Bulls reward persistence
Salzburg almost got off to an ideal start, but when Adamus finished (9th) a Wolfsberger had a leg between them and the ball went wide of the goal. Only at the end of the first half did the “Bulls” get another clear chance to score: Karim Adeyemi seemed to have gotten past WAC keeper Alexander Kofler, but the goalkeeper saved the corner (39′). The WAC did not record a shot on the opposing goal until the break whistle. Tai Baribo came close, the nine-time goalscorer of the season hit the ball after a long pass by Dominik Baumgartner, who was fit again, but not ideal (16′).
After a change of sides, Salzburg visibly tried to increase the pressure. After an hour, a hit was in the air. The advanced Piatkowski headed wide of the post (63′), Mohamed Camara shot wide of the far post (66′), Brendan Aaronson made sure everything was right except for the shot (71′). For their part, the Wolfsbergers tried to set accents again in the finish. This worked well into injury time, before Salzburg finally got their reward. Substitute Sucic pulled away after Danish work from Kristensen and Kjaergaard before Aaronson even doubled down against disappointed guests.
