Siena, on March 5th the Strade Bianche show returns
The “classic of the northernmost southern Europe” is now a key race of the UCI WorldTour calendar. The last corridor to impose itself in Piazza del Campo was the Dutch Mathieu van der Poel.
The women’s race anticipates the men’s race by a few hours and promises to be one of the most spectacular races of the year both for its track, unique in the world panorama, and for the participation of the highest technical level. The last edition was won by Chantal van den Broek-Blaak.
Mathieu van der Poel he said: “Winning the Strade Bianche last year was one of the most important days of my career because it is a race that I have dreamed of winning for a long time. It was a challenge with some of the strongest corridors in the world, something very special. I felt strong and it was fantastic to be able to crown the work my teammates had done during the race. I’m sorry I can’t be there in a few weeks for my good title because racing has a unique charm and I hope my teammates can get a good result, give them some advice. “
“We are very happy that cycling events of this magnitude can once again cross our territories, conveying the image of our city – comments the Councilor for Sport of the Municipality of Siena Paolo Benini – the culture of sport deserves, especially at this moment, to be the protagonist of the life of our citizens. The attention we are paying to outdoor sports and the world of biking has always been high for our administration. The two races, as per the tradition of recent years, will start from Siena and will end in our suggestive Piazza del Campo, a goal for sport and for the eyes “.
Mauro Vegni RCS Sport Cycling Directorhe has declared: “For some time now we have established a collaboration relationship with the Administration of Siena that allows us to organize one of the most loved races by runners and fans and through which we can promote the unique places of the Sienese territory in the world, starting from the incomparable scenario of Piazza del Campo. With Strade Bianche and Strade Bianche Women Elite we confirm the now consolidated path that for some years has contributed to making the Northern Classic further south of Europe a reference point among the great races on the international scene as evidenced by the many champions at the start, every year more, and I’m sure that this year too the show will be of the highest level. “
