Czech Republic, February 17 (BD) – The amount of municipal waste varies greatly from one European country to another, ranging from 282 kg to 845 kg per person. Although the amount varies from year to year, only seven Member States produced less municipal waste per capita in 2020 than in 1995: Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands. The volume of municipal waste produced in the Czech Republic in 2020 was 507 kg per capita, which is close to the European average of 505 kg per capita and since 1995 this is an increase of 70%.

Although the EU brings more waste, the total amount of waste disposed of in landfills decreases as recycling systems improve. In the Czech Republic, the Waste Act also has an impact, which emphasizes waste prevention, defines the waste management hierarchy and promotes the basic principles of environmental protection and health in waste management. In 2011, the Czech Republic processed 3.3 million tons of waste, in 2020 this number increased to almost 5.3 million tons.
