Rouens. Waste on the Sainte-Catherine coast: sorting bins soon, but no more trash cans

It is one of the most emblematic places in Rouen (Seine Maritime), where locals and tourists stop year-round. The Sainte-Catherine coast, to the east of the city, not only offers an exceptional panorama, but also a rural walk for those who feel capable of climbing it on foot. And it is precisely in the heart of greenery only shocking and upsetting scenes: pile of rubbishimmortalized by passers-by and then posted on social networks, are regularly observed, as was the case on February 14.
Plastic bottles, glass, supermarket bags… Some people don’t hesitate to leave the leftovers from their picnic on siteat the very foot of the panels which praise the beauty of the fauna and flora of the site.
No trash cans along the trail
The show, online, is widely commented. “How to ransack nature in this way”, “Shameful, disastrous”, “I would like to see how it is at home”, can we read, when others wonder about the sufficient presence of garbage cans. And precisely, the City refuses to place them along the path, for two reasons. First because “a trash can is not pretty, admits Kader Chekhemani, assistant for cleanliness, public tranquility and parking. We want to preserve the natural environment. On this protected site, one must behave as in the mountains or at the sea, where there are not many garbage cans. Secondly, because their absence pushes de facto walkers to take responsibility, in accordance with the policy adopted in the town centre.
Sorting bins soon to be installed
“If we put baskets, there will be a lot of waste. If they are full, it will overflow, or if it is windy, everything will fly away. This is why the municipality has confined the bins to the belvedere car park, and new bins will arrive soon. “We want selective sorting. Bins with a larger capacity and closed, it is very important, are under construction, ”continues Kader Chekhemani.
As for the risk encouraged for illegal dumping on the public highway, it varies according to the nature of the offence: the fine can in any case range from 35 to 1,500 euros in the event of a repeat offence. It is difficult, however, to carry out repression on the Sainte-Catherine coast, “because it is not a question of posting police officers when people are picnicking”, but also and above all because “we hope that people play the game. It makes sense for people to consume their waste and bring it up there, ”revealed the chosen one.
