Two power packages for men’s hockey will succeed in the final of four quarter-final games at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Canada and Sweden are in first and fourth place in the hockey medal for men through the ages.
Canada has the most gold medals in men’s hockey, but its quest for a return to gold was weighed by a second-place finish in Group A.
The Canadians were forced to play against China in the playoffs just to start the clash with fourth-seeded Sweden on Wednesday morning.
Sweden was best in second place in the three groups. It scored seven out of nine possible points and beat Canada in the seeding table by one point.
The winner of Wednesday’s match will face the USA or Slovakia in the semifinals, while the loser will make an early exit from the competition.

Preview
Canada-Sweden are expected to be closest to the four quarter-finals, and it’s not just because of the proximity to their seeding in the knockout round.
They are usually two of the strongest men’s hockey nations at the Olympics and they are eight years away from the gold medal deal that Canada won.
Canada’s loss to the United States in Group A forced it below the top four in the seeding table. That result made it play an extra match on the Beijing ice.
Canada eliminated China with ease on Tuesday morning with a 7-2 result. The Canadians did not get much on the expected result. They beat China twice with a total score of 12-2.
The high-scoring games enabled Adam Tambellini to represent Canada at the top of the Olympic points table after four matches.
Tambellini leads the competition with seven points from three goals and four assists. Eric O’Dell and Kent Johnson are also ranked among the top 10 in points.
Sweden can match that firepower with its own offensive depth. Lucas Wallmark is split for the tournament management in goals with four, while Jonathan Pudas and Henrik Tomernes are among six players in a draw with four assists.
Sweden scored on 10 occasions in Group C games, but it gave up seven goals, including four in an overtime loss against Finland.
There may be concerns about the Canadian defense as well, as it dropped four targets to the United States.
Canada dropped twice in the last two matches, but both of these competitions were against China, which was the worst squad in the 12-team tournament.
Canada needs a strong first period to keep the deep Sweden attack away. If that happens, it can take advantage of the Swedish Armed Forces with its strong attackers.
The margins are expected to be thin, and it can take a moment or two of brilliance for both teams to stay alive in the medal hunt.
