Norway must become smaller – not more – dependent on gas

Once again, the Young Conservatives are running the oil lobby’s errand.
This is a Si; D post. Opinions in the text are at the writer’s expense. Posts can send hits.
County leader in Nordland Unge Høyre Maria Munkhaug writes in Si; D that Norway must continue to produce oil and gas to prevent Russian dictatorship.
For Unge Høyre, it seems that there are hardly any limits to what Norwegian gas can do for us: Save us from the Russian invasion of Ukraine and solve the climate crisis! And Norwegian gas has now obviously also become “democratic”. Unfortunately, that is too good to be true.
Today, the European energy market is far too dependent on gas. The solution is not to make Europe even more gas-dependent – it will only strengthen Russia’s power in an already vulnerable energy market.
Requires conversion
On the contrary, the European energy market must move away from fossil energy, so Europe becomes less dependent on Russian gas.
Over the next eight years, Europe will cut their emissions by 55 percent, to net zero by 2050. An unparalleled restructuring will be required. The demand for fossil energy will fall drastically, and production will be far more expensive than it is today.
Then it would be foolish to look for new oil and gas fields. The gas we find today, hardly anyone will want when it can be pumped up sometime in the late 2030s. In 15 years, Norway can sit with its beard in the mailbox because we were to save Europe from Russian gas, while the rest of the continent switched to renewable energy.
Green guarantee
Instead, we must develop more renewable energy and prevent Norway from stopping the exchange of power with Europe. Norway can become the green guarantee against President Vladimir Putin’s gambling with gas prices. This is good for both security policy and the electricity crisis.
Looking for more oil and gas will not ensure low electricity prices or Ukraine’s independence. The only thing that is certain is that Europe needs less oil and gas with each passing year. Then you can sit on the sidelines by closing your eyes together with Unge Høyre, or you can throw yourself on the green, electric wave.
