Ice Hockey Olympics Updates: Canada Beats China, Advances to Quarters vs. Sweden

Beijing, China – MGoBlue.com will track the progress of four other ice hockey students at the University of Michigan and two former Wolverines – all first-time Olympics – at the 2022 Winter Olympics, where the men’s ice hockey competition takes place February 10-20. UM sophomores Matty Beniers and Brendan Brisson accompanied by Steven Kampfer (2007-10) and Strauss Mann (2019-21) on Team USA, while Canada’s list includes other students Kent Johnson and Owen Power. Before this year, 16 Wolverines competed in hockey at the Winter Olympics.
Tuesday, February 15
Team Canada won a 7-2 win over China in the qualifiers. Kent Johnson, Canada’s leading scorer, added his fifth point in the Olympics with an assist. Johnson had one shot and was +1 at 12:52. Owen Power lead the Canadians in time on ice again at 20:33 and had two shots. In less than 24 hours, Canada will be back and face Sweden in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (February 16) at 8:30 AM EST. » Statistics and video (NBCOlympics.com)
In another qualifier on Tuesday, Slovakia shut out Germany 4-0 to decide Team USA’s opponents for their quarter-final game, scheduled for 23:10 EST Tuesday (12:10 Wednesday in China).

Team Canada won 5-0 against host nation China in their last preliminary match. Kent Johnson scored a goal and an assist and Owen Power had an assist. It was Johnson who pointed out to officials that his team had scored 2:09 when Ben Street buried a Johnson rebound (Look at). Johnson scored his first goal in the Olympics, Canada’s only goal in the second period, and scored a goal from the circle when he joined the game (Look at). Power collected their first point when Canada took a 5-0 lead. He released a perfectly placed shot that was redirected by Corban Knight (Look at). For the third straight match, Power led their team in time on the ice, played 20:59, while taking five shots. Johnson finished a +3 with three shots in 14:11. Steven Kampfer scored Team USA’s first goal when the Americans defeated Germany 3-2 in the last match of the preliminary round. With 3-0 in group A, the USA gets a bye to the quarter-final round on Wednesday (February 16). Kampfer’s first goal and third point in the Olympics came on power play, a rocket from the left point (Look at) at 4:26 by the first to make it a 1-1 draw. Kampfer finished second in the team in ice time, played 23:01 and took three shots. Matty Beniers won seven of 11 matches and finished +1 in 18:27. Brendan Brisson took a shot and a penalty of 10:24. Strauss Mann backstoped Team USA to a 4-2 victory over Canada in Group A games. He made 35 saves in his Olympic debut, including seven in a late third period when Team USA ended up with two skaters. Brendan Brisson scored the match-winning goal early in the second period, his second goal in as many matches (Look at). Steven Kampfer earned his second point in as many games with the secondary assist on the United States first goal. He played 19:40 and finished +1. Matty Beniers set up the most minutes of the US forwards at 22:01 and won four draws. Owen Power continued to put up big minutes and led Canada with 22:13 ice time. Kent Johnson led the team in shots on goal by five.

Brendan Brisson scored the first goal for Team USA (Look at) when the Americans went to an 8-0 victory over the host nation China. All three skaters from Michigan took part in the points. Brisson’s nasty one-timer beat the net memory on power play. Deputy Captain Steven Kampfer got a shot redirected by Sean Farrell to start the third when the United States took a 5-0 lead. A big snipe past Matty Beniers (Look at) made 7-0 and went over the right shoulder of the Chinese net memory. Kampfer finished with an assist and had +3 and played 17:12. The Beniers had one goal, won eight draws, were +1 in 18:11 ice time. Brisson had one goal, took five shots and was even at 10:46. Canada started the Olympics with a 5-1 victory over Germany. Originally a deputy tab but was added to the active list a week ago, Kent Johnson had two assists on the first two goals. He had the primary assist on the first goal when he centered a pass for Alex Grant at 4:43. Five minutes later, Owen Power and Johnson played catch before Ben Street swung the puck around the boards where Johnson and Eric O’Dell fought for it along the halfway wall to put Street up 2-0. Johnson finished a +1 and played 13:29 on 23 shifts. Power led the team in time on ice, played 19:33 and finished a +2.
