In 2021, compared to 2019, there is a -79% loss in demand from Portugal by Americans, which is altered by the increase in demand by Dutch (+24%), Luxembourgers (+22%), Germans (+16%) , Swiss (+13%) and French (+8%). Additionally, there is a significant growth in Portuguese users aged 18-24 (+135%) and over 65 (+130%) looking for a home. The data are from Imovirtual, a reference real estate portal, which reveals a study on the demand for a home for purchase by user profile between 2019 and 2021.
With regard to the foreign market, demand in the last three years still represents around 16% of all Imovirtual traffic (compared to 23% in 2019). Brazil (20% of foreign users), France (15%), Switzerland (10%), United States (9%) and United Kingdom (8%) are the countries that most looked for a home in Portugal in 2021, a top 5 same as 2020. In 2019, the top was headed by the United States (30%), Brazil (20%), France (10%), Switzerland (7%) and the United Kingdom (7%).
Porto, Lisbon and Braga are the cities chosen by foreigners. Considered as the main nationalities in 2021, as cities most sought after by Brazilians are Porto (23%), Lisbon (21%) and Braga (19%). Already franchisees are Braga (20%), Porto (18%) and Lisbon (16%). In the case of the Swiss, the preference is for Braga (20%), Porto (18%) and Faro (12%). Aveiro, Leiria and Setúbal are also in these conditions.

More young and old looking for a home with the pandemic

Geographically, Setúbal (-87%) and Faro (-82%) recorded the biggest drop in people looking for a home compared to 2020. Globally, people located in Lisbon (4,232,086) and Porto (2,122,582) were the ones that most looked for a house in 2021, followed by Braga (425,337), Coimbra (312,803) and Aveiro (276,152).
