Toulouse: car, bicycle, public transport, five years of travel scrutinized
The Urban Planning Agency of the Toulouse conurbation observed travel between 2015 and 2020. Car, bicycle, public transport, plane are screened.
The Mobility Observatory of the Toulouse urban planning agency (AuAT) has just made public the data concerning transport in the Toulouse attraction area for 2020. Collected from the various transport players, they illustrate the main trends at work in terms of mobility.
Home-work journeys: the queen car. Between 2013 and 2018, travel between intermunicipalities in the agglomeration all increased. The champions remain trips between Muretain and Toulouse Métropole (33,700 per day), and between Sicoval and Métropole (31,100). Note that most of these journeys are made by car. Only residents of Toulouse Métropole and Sicoval have a modal share of 10% or more for exchange public transport. This share rises to 21% for internal travel within Toulouse Métropole.
Air and rail: the impact of Covid. The number of passengers at Toulouse Blagnac airport increased sharply between 2015 and 2019, reaching more than 9.6 million passengers. The number of aircraft movements peaked in 2017, with 90,200 commercial flights, and then remained stable until 2019. The number of passengers fell by 67% with the Covid crisis in 2020. For rail, 7 .6 million travelers represented Matabiau station in 2020. Attendance at all stations in the Toulouse urban area was impacted by Covid, up to – 40%.
Vehicle fleet: diesel in free fall. Since 2017, the number of new petrol cars has been greater than the number of diesel cars in Haute-Garonne. In 2019, 25,000 new petrol cars were sold, compared to 13,000 diesels (20,000 in 2015), 2,500 hybrids and 1,000 electrics. The department has 740,000 private vehicles under 15 years old in 2019 (constantly increasing since 2015).
Carpooling and carsharing: the offer is growing. The practice and number of carpooling areas have grown in recent years. The Departmental Council and Tisséo have both approved master plans. The Covoitéo (Tisséo), RézoPouce or Karos tools offer possibilities for finding carpoolers. The car-sharing service has also developed in Toulouse with Citiz: 4,977 subscribers in 2020, compared to 1,580 in 2015. The Iodines and Renault Mobility services are also present in Toulouse.
Traffic accidents: down. In Haute-Garonne, accidents and the number of victims have been falling since 2017: 996 accidents in 2017, 914 in 2018 and 809 in 2019. It should be noted that in 2019, the number of deaths and injuries by car was barely higher (156) to killed and injured in motorized two-wheelers (146).
Cycling: a very urban practice
In the Toulouse conurbation, the municipalities which have a high cycling modal share are very often the most urban municipalities and those which concentrate the most jobs within their urban centres: Toulouse, Ramonville-Saint-Agne, Blagnac or Tournefeuille. In Toulouse, notes the Urban Planning Agency, the cycling modal share amounted to 9.1% for commuting in 2018. This was 8.2% in 2017, i.e. an increase of almost 1 point.
Accidents: up for 3 years
The agglomeration has 1,668 km of cycle paths, and 2,448 bicycle parking spaces with regulated access. Of all these places, 53% are in stations. The secure bicycle parking offer is supplemented in the public space by bicycle racks.
Across the Haute-Garonne, there is an increase in cyclist and pedestrian victims. In 2018 in Haute-Garonne, there were 21 cyclists killed and injured in hospital; then 37 in 2019, and even 38 in 2020, the Covid year when the number of deaths and injuries in cars and motorcycles fell. This development is certainly related to the increase in the number of practitioners for several years. For pedestrians too, the evolution has been negative since 2018, with 49 killed and injured hospitalized that year, then 61 in 2019, and another 61 in 2020.
