The Republic of San Marino joins Eusair
EU strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Macro-region
Rome, 14 Feb. (askanews) – The Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of San Marino announced that, following the adoption by the European Commission of the addendum Communication to the initiate which completes the accession process in May 2021, San Marino from today it is formally the tenth country to be part of EUSAIR, the EU Strategy for the Adriatic Ionian Macro-region.
The overall objective of EUSAIR is to promote economic and social sustainability and prosperity in the Adriatic Ionian region, focusing on four fundamental pillars: blue growth (linked to marine ecosystems), connection of the region (transport and energy), quality of the environment and sustainable tourism.
The EUSAIR Strategy currently has nine other member countries; Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia with which the Republic of San Marino maintains excellent diplomatic relations both bilaterally and multilaterally, also through the activities of the Republic at the Adriatic Ionian Initiative to which San Marino joined in 2019.
Given its size and geographical location in the Adriatic region, therefore, the territory of San Marino overlaps the area in which EUSAIR carries out its projects, actions and activities.
Inclusion in EUSAIR, reads a note, “is another step for San Marino towards its European integration and regional cooperation with neighboring EU Member States and candidate and potential candidate countries. It will strengthen San Marino’s alignment with EU policies, joint actions to respond to macro-regional challenges, as well as coordination and dialogue between EUSAIR countries ”.
With the inclusion in EUSAIR, San Marino has the right to participate in the governance structure of EUSAIR, both on a political, coordination and operational level. At the same time, San Marino will gain experience and ever greater integration in the implementation of EU policies.
“The inclusion of San Marino in the EUSAIR – the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari declared with warm satisfaction – is a positive and decisive result that allows us to strengthen dialogue and collaboration with the countries of the Adriatic Macroregion Ionian, whether they are members of the European Union or not. The Strategy focuses on transnational cooperation and the promotion and development of environmental sustainability projects with a strong impact in the economic, tourism and commercial fields; it also strengthens the network of dialogue and comparison between participating European partners and common projects. ”
