Women’s Carnival, Carnival Saturday and Shrove Monday: How will Cologne Carnival 2022 work? All information about Corona rules, procedure and events at a glance.

Cologne – Cologne* is considered the carnival stronghold. Every year around a million revelers are drawn to the cathedral city for the Shrove Monday procession alone. But Shrove Monday*, pub carnival* and the funky parties are taking place differently than usual this year. The reason: the corona virus. The current status of how the Cologne carnival * can be celebrated. The important Corona rule: all of Cologne becomes a customs zone* – means: 2G+* applies throughout Cologne during carnival.

Carnival 2022 in Cologne: women’s carnival, carnival Saturday and Shrove Monday – that’s planned

  • Women’s Carnival 2022* This year falls on Thursday, February 24, 2022. The street carnival on the Alter Markt will open at 11:11 sharp.
  • Carnival Friday 2022*: Carnival Friday (February 25) can take place. 2G+ applies.
  • Carnival Saturday 2022*: The situation is similar for Carnival Saturday (February 26).
  • Carnival Sunday 2022*: On Carnival Sunday (February 27th) there are traditional school and Veedels parades. But in the 2022 session, carnival fans will have to do without the formats. However, individual meetings and carnival events are to take place.
  • Shrove Monday 2022*: The Shrove Monday procession will pass through the RheinEnergie Stadium in 2022. 8800 spectators are allowed in the stadium.
  • Violet Tuesday 2022*: On Violet Tuesday, March 1st, there are traditionally parades, pub events and in the evening the popular Nubbelverbrennungen all over Cologne. It is not yet clear what the 2022 session will look like. There should be no relocations.

Cologne Carnival 2022: These Corona rules apply in Cologne

The 2G+ rule currently applies to the Cologne Carnival. This means that only vaccinated and recovered people are allowed. In addition, guests must present a negative corona test result. There are only exceptions for vaccinated guests who have also been boosted or recovered. Pupils are also exempt from the obligation to take tests outside of the holidays. The 2G+ concept also applies to Cologne’s gastronomy – but everyone here has to show a negative corona test.

New Corona rules for the Cologne carnival

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has published a new Corona Protection Ordinance*, which has been in effect since February 9th. The exact rules for the carnival in North Rhine-Westphalia * were also announced therein.

Cologne Carnival 2022: These events will take place

Despite the uncertainty, the first pubs, bars and venues are in the offing, planning multiple sessions and other formats. An overview of which carnival events are canceled and which are taking place despite the pandemic*.
