Poisoned dogs, the veterinarian’s useful advice for owners
It is an ignoble gesture, and it seems pure superfluous to have to underline it. Yet in San Marino, even in the last week, several dogs were poisoned with esc specially left in a green area of the Titan. Various rumors have been running through social media about possible findings of poisoned morsels also in other areas, but so far the certain unique cases are those of Monte Cerreto.
So we asked the doctor Roberta Gaiof the San Marino Veterinary Clinic, some useful tips for dog owners who, despite themselves, had to face a case of poisoning.
What are the symptoms of poisoning?
“The first is increased salivation (drooling), and they should also have tremors in the head and body. Within a few minutes these symptoms worsen and a state of confusion also presents itself ”.
What should a master do immediately?
“The first thing is not to waste time. So you have to call the veterinary emergency service as soon as possible. It is therefore good to have the number of emergencies of your veterinarian and also of the closest structures within reach. The question of time is fundamental. But what is really important, especially in this moment of alertness, is prevention: that is, we must pay maximum attention to what the dog does. Now it is good not to release the dog, keeping it on a leash, and if used to, put a muzzle, especially if the dog tends to ingest everything that comes within range. And if you see a bait you have to pick it up, being careful not to get dirty, and call the police to deliver the bite and report it “.
What not to do instead?
“I repeat, we must not waste time. Therefore it may not be useful to administer hydrogen peroxide because not all dogs vomit quickly and not all are able to administer it. Much better to take him to the nearest vet who will administer a specific drug with which you are sure you can release him. I also advise against the administration of water and sales “.
What is good to always have with you?
“If you are in places particularly far from structures, such as in the mountains, there are first aid kits for dogs to treat wounds and remove ticks. Furthermore, in case of allergy, it is good to have medicines, prescribed by the veterinarian ”.
