Oncology and cardiology: Portugal needs psychological intervention in smoking! | Opinion
In February, more precisely on the 4th and 14th, we “celebrate” against two of the pathologies that kill the most today: cancer and cardiovascular diseases, respectively.
Although it is a covid-19 pandemic, we sometimes forget that, these diseases have not disappeared in recent years and continue to kill. When they don’t, life and the quality of their health impact, as well as the economy, a significant health impact country, as well as life, families. This is even greater considering all the contingency measures imposed by the pandemic and which, understandably, implied a reorganization of the SNS risk exercises in the fight against it. This led to an increase in the risks and prevention of diseases, with an increase in more serious cases, whose prevalence is still long to be counted.
For this reason, although the word “celebrate” is common when referring to commemorative days, this word is far from being adequate to the physical and mental suffering associated with these pathologies that take the lives of thousands of people every year. Just to give an example of some numbers that we should think about, every day in Portugal at least 79 people die from cancer. Of the different types, cancer of cancer is different or that more victims, having suffered, in 2020, 1.8 million people worldwide. Acute coronary disease affects about 10,000 people per year in Portugal. In both cases, tobacco use has been associated with an increased risk of developing pathologies, being associated with the development of 82% of consumption disease tumors and explaining about 20% of coronary deaths. This being a health of deaths, an important preventable cause and, mainly, the implementation of public health policies that implement, relevant, socially constructed and economically efficient.
This is one of the areas in which scientific knowledge is an ally of social problems, and can be used as a guide for effective actions to be developed. At this level, as in so many other domains under evaluation, mental health and the last care of our psychology, as a science, becomes essential for the correct smoking habits, its determining factors and the development of promotional, preventive and remedial intervention measures. in smoking cessation.
The primordial psychological practice, invariably, the promotion of the individual’s development, the promotion of their psychological and physical well-being. Having the individual, within the scope of clinical practice, that one is a smoker and not planning or guiding an appropriate intervention for smoking cessation is an incorrect behavior that violates the ethical principles of the practice of health professionals in general, and of psychologists, in in particular, who advocate that type/like psychologists help them or their client to in any way protect their interests” and “must not intervene in a legitimate way to harm him or to cause him harm, either by actions or by omission”. In achieving this objective, professional training focused on the smoking habits of health professionals themselves, their impact on clinical practices and on the study and implementation of empirically validated intervention programs in terms of smoking cessation, becomes essential.
One of the main causes of oncological diseases is the study aimed at studying the consumption of affection in professional psychology relationships and practices in the area of smoking cessation (more information via e-mail [email protected] and at https:// eusinto.me/profissionais-de-saude-e-saude-psicologica/investigacao-em-saude-psychologica/), which results from a partnership between the Universidade Portucalense, in Portugal, and the Tobacco Control Unit of the Instituto Catalão of Oncology and the Universidad Oberta de Catalunya, in Spain, with the support of the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses and the Consejo General de la Psicología de España.
Be a person in the coming years to wait for last February 4th and 1st in which the developing society will be this commemorative of the days that develop and represent the present day in many diseases that plague.
