“Not so sluggish”: FC Bayern Munich starts preparation for Red Bull Salzburg
After the 4-2 embarrassment in Bochum on Saturday, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann will see another team in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Salzburg on Wednesday (9 p.m. / live Sky, ServusTV).
“It just can’t be so sluggish in everything,” said Nagelsmann. Oliver Kahn expects the same. “Sometimes it’s a good thing that you can now play in Salzburg a few days later in order to forget a result like that as quickly as possible,” said the Bayern boss.
Kahn: First half in Bochum “unacceptable”
“I assume that the players know that a first half like in Bochum is unacceptable. We fell far short of our potential there,” said Kahn. The 52-year-old expects Robert Lewandowski and Co. to be delivered again in Salzburg and recalled the similar situation after the end of the DFB Cup at the end of October: “We also showed the right reaction after the 0:5 in Gladbach and that Game clearly won. And I assume that will be the case now.” This was followed by two 5-2 wins in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
Kahn does not see a fundamental mentality problem among the Bayern pros. “When you lose big, the mentality issue is always brought up quickly,” said Kahn. However, he saw an attitude problem for defensive work: “But I think that not only this season, but in recent seasons, we have been missing a lot defensively in the backward movement and in working against the ball. We concede too many goals.”
Neuer, Goretzka, Davies, Musiala are missing against Salzburg
Nagelsmann will take a very close look at the selection of personnel for Wednesday on the training ground. Because after the mistake in Bochum, the 34-year-old revealed that this had already become “a bit apparent” during training. “We didn’t have a good final training session,” reported Nagelsmann. “We’re already a top team, but obviously we can’t get a lot of players to flip the switch. We didn’t have enough excitement.”
Germany’s team kicker Joshua Kimmich had also changed his attitude towards the promoted team. “We can’t approach the next games like this,” warned the midfielder. Captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, as well as Leon Goretzka (both knees), Alphonso Davies (heart muscle) and Jamal Musiala (Corona) will also be missing in Salzburg. ÖFB team kicker Marcel Sabitzer can only hope for a place as a “joker”.
