It’s here Thiefosse
Thiefosse is nearly 400 meters of vertical drop. 419 meters above sea level at the lowest level of the town, 890 at the highest. A deep valley which also gave its name to the place, the pit. As for “thié”, we don’t really know where it can come from, maybe the name of an inhabitant in remote times, maybe a Thierry. Still, the first written mention is not so old since it dates back to 1433. The name has also evolved since at that time we speak of “Thierfosse” and in 1656 of “Thiefot”.
Old but sparsely populated site
That the site is not mentioned does not mean that there was nobody in this narrow valley which allows the great monasteries of the area, Remiremont and Munster, to exchange. We passed there quite often even if the passes were very high. The place is still not very populated in 1701 since it depends on Vagney for the cure, even if the 500 inhabitants are authorized to build a chapel, before the place becomes a parish at the beginning of the XIX century.
Thiefosse will have to wait a long time before becoming anything other than a Vagney village. In 1818, a petition asked for the independence of the commune. She is refused. But in 1835 the inhabitants won their case. No choice for the prefect of the time since between times textile industries were deployed and the number of inhabitants exploded. Proud of their new commune, the inhabitants of the time did not skimp to rebuild a beautiful and large church in place of the small chapel and it was in 1850 that they completed the beautiful Saint Antoine church. Thiefosse is a pretty natural town with the famous Gorges du Crosery where the Moselotte flows, or with the Pissoir or Bouchot waterfalls. In thiefosse you listen to France bleu on 103.1
