Thessaloniki: Signs of de-escalation of viral load in wastewater
Stabilizer with signs of de-escalation its concentration tendency is reflected viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the last measurements of the week for the research carried out by the Sewage Epidemiology Team of AUTh with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and within the National Network of EODY. As shown in the charts, they were recorded from the beginning of the week variations between measurements, with their rolling weekly average however showing a slight decrease in viral load. Specifically, in the samples taken daily at the entrance of the Thessaloniki Wastewater Treatment Plant, regarding the rationalized values related to the secretion of viral load, the average value of the two most recent measurements, namely, Wednesday 09/02/2022 and Thursday 10 / 02/2022 is: –Stable (-11%) in relation to the average value of the two immediately preceding measurements of Monday 07/02/2022 and Tuesday 08/02/2022. –Marginally constant (-23%) in relation to the average price of the previous Wednesday 02/02/2022 and Thursday 03/02/22.
“Although the level of viral load is high and corresponds to a large spread of the virus, the quality of the measurements tends to an estimate gradual improvement of the epidemiological picturesomething that as always requires more days to be drawn as a safe conclusion “, said to APE-MPE the rector of AUTh and scientific responsible of the research project, professor. Nikos Papaioannou.
Asked what are the data that contribute to an improvement of the epidemiological picture, the rector of AUTh answered: “From February 3 onwards, based on 8 measurements, the rate of de-escalation of the viral load shows doubling every 15 days. Perhaps most importantly, the pathogenic Delta strain of the virus is now marginally detected in sewage. Internally, with its almost universal dominance Omicron executivesfrom which a very large number of citizens in Thessaloniki have contracted or become ill – mainly asymptomatically – in combination with the fact that the vaccination rate has now reached a fairly high level, a wall of immunity has been built in the community that we expect next there should be a de-escalation of all indicators of the pandemic “.
The coronavirus assessment methodology in municipal waste, developed by the AUTh team, streamlines the measurements of the virus genome concentration based on 24 environmental factors, which may alter the results of the measurements. The molecular method of real-time PCR, developed by the AUTh Team, has the ability to selectively amplify the part of the gene that encodes the Omicron strain protein.
