Number of incidents at Amsterdam-North station tenfold in four years
The number of incidents registered by the police in and around the Noord metro station has increased tenfold since it opened in 2018 from 4 to 42 in 2021. These concern incidents ranging from nuisance to violence. Compared to other public transport stations in the big city, the number of registrations is not striking.
Mayor Femke Halsema wrote this in a letter to the council after questions from the VVD.
The victims and perpetrators of the incidents at the station are groups of young people. Halsema suspects that this is because it is used a lot by young people and is spreading a national station because students transfer from the province to across the city. Last month, a 12-year-old boy was stabbed by a peer at the station.
Camera Surveillance
Due to the number of incidents, the police are paying extra attention to the area. The municipal camera surveillance that was instituted in August 2021 will be followed with a second camera expanded. There is also extra surveillance at the station and on the bus platform.
The number of incidents at Noord station in 2021 was in line with other major stations such as Bijlmer Arena and Muiderpoort Station. It is clear, however, that the number of incidents has decreased in recent years at other major stations in the city.
According to Halsema, social control around Noord station is expected to improve in due course, partly through the arrival of a food court and the commissioning of future homes.
