Olympic Games in Beijing today: Canada beats Sweden 11-0 in the women’s hockey quarterfinals
Hey! Team Canada crushed it today in ice hockey and ice skating. And after the first full week of competition in Beijing, Team Canada has won a total of 12 medals. Here’s what our Olympians did when you slept.
Here’s what happened during the night:
- Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva failed a test for a banned substance in December last year, but her temporary suspension was lifted by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency, a decision that the International Olympic Committee will appeal, the International Testing Bureau said on Friday.
- Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych used his moment in the Olympic spotlight to make a gesture of peace regarding the tense situation at Ukraine’s border with Russia. The men’s skeleton athlete showed a paper sign with the text “No war in Ukraine” after his third run.
- Canada’s Graeme Fish placed sixth in the 10,000-meter long distance skating at the Beijing Olympics on Friday. Meanwhile, Canadian teammate and defending Olympic champion Ted-Jan Bloemen went out and finished in eighth place. Bloemen was the reigning gold medalist at this distance.
- Canada skip Jennifer Jones was defeated by Japanese Satsuki Fujisawa by 8-5 in curling on the Ice Cube. It was the first time Jones lost a curling match at an Olympics. In tonight’s men’s game, Swiss Peter de Cruz beat Canada’s Brad Gushue 5-3.
- It is painfully obvious, the prevailing face of the games is white. But Canadian figure skater Elladj Baldé hopes to help change that.
- And Canada’s national synchronized swimming program, which has been hit by allegations of abuse and mistreatment by several former Olympians who say they have been squeezed into dangerous eating disorders, has introduced new policies that it says will better protect athletes, according to a Globe and Mail investigation.
Globe on the ground
The Globe’s James Griffiths had never seen a hockey game before the Winter Olympics. So, of course, The Globe sent him to watch the US-China men’s match.
Defending gold medalist Ted-Jan Bloemen saw a huge disappointment in the 10,000 meter long skating race. This is from the guy who was Canada’s surprise package at the Pyeongchang Games 2018. Bloemen placed eighth on Friday, after a 10th place in the 5,000 m earlier this week.
As tourists at the Beijing Olympics, “we are here and not here”, Cathal Kelly writes: Staying in hotels we can not walk away from, driving past restaurants we can not eat at, looking through bus windows at people we can not interact with.
