Coronavirus in Prague: 20,000 cases per week, epidemic weakening
An epidemic wave caused by the omicron variant the metropolis hit the first of all regions, and last week, as expected, it began to move to other regions. The incidence in Prague was thus the highest among the regions for several weeks, now only two regions are better off – Zlínský and Karlovarský. Today, the capital has 1,526 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a thousand less than last Friday.
In the middle of the week, Prague hospitals cared for 489 people with covid, 161 more than on the same day last week. In the intensive care units, 24 patients came in the same period, now there are 87.
In Prague, where about 1.3 million people live, since the epidemic began last March, laboratories have confirmed more than 430,000 cases of coronavirus, 3370 people died with covid. The 19-year covid vaccine in the metropolis delivered more than 3.1 million. Vaccination is usually two-dose and people can come for an extra booster dose, but interest has been declining recently.
Omikron
The high numbers infected in previous weeks additionally variant omicron. It is significantly more contagious than previous types of coronavirus, but experience with covid-19 has been less severe. Nevertheless, the number of hospitalizations is growing nationwide, but hospitals are not burdened by as much as in previous waves.
State gradually dismantles the remaining anti-epidemic measures, people no longer have to prove that they have been vaccinated or covid in the last six months when visiting restaurants, hairdressers, accommodation facilities, swimming pools, theaters, ski resorts and other services. Next week, testing in schools and companies will end, and the limit of participants in mass events will gradually increase. From March, only indoor respirators will probably be mandatory.
