A total of 29 cases of Omicron subtype BA.2, also known as “Omicron 2”, were recorded in Greece from the end of December to January 31, the period covered by the latest EODY genomic surveillance report.
Eight of the BA.2 cases were located in central Athens, two in western Athens, 1 in the south and one in the north.

Four cases in the prefecture of Lassithi, three in Heraklion, Crete, one in Arta and one in Milos.
The remaining cases were imported.
BA.2 is estimated to be up to 50% more contagious and prevalent in Europe, as has already happened in Denmark.
To date, there is no evidence that it causes a milder or more serious disease in relation to the BA.1 sub-variant that remains predominantly prevalent in Greece.
