Swine fever, demonstration against killing in Genoa
They rise to 29 confirmed cases of African swine fever between Liguria and Piedmont Liguria. A new positivity was found in a wild boar found dead in Mignanego, in the hinterland of the province of Genoa, analyzed by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta in the last 24 hours together with 4 other corpses.
In total, therefore, as of February 4, 14 wild boars were killed by African swine fever in Piedmont, 15 were found in Liguria, within a limited “red zone” which includes 114 municipalities and where it is forbidden to access the woods, except for paved roads. Both Piedmont and Liguria are developing i abatement plans and for weeks now in the two Regions (and in the neighboring ones) and the institutions are stannondondo on the strategies necessary not only to counter the spread of the virus, but also more accurate for the woods in search of any others that must be assigned to the Zooprophylactic Institute for analysis.
Thousands of culls are expected in the coming months
I’m talking about thousands of wild boars and pigs to be killed because within the red zone, and in Genoa, where the presence of wild boars in the city has been rooted for years, the discovery of a dead and positive wild boar in the area of the Staglieno cemetery has triggered a special culling measure also for the now “urban” examples that populate the Bisagno shoreabout a duty according to the latest inspection by Ligurian experts.
The culling plans have already sparked controversy and protests both by breeders and by citizens opposed to the indiscriminate indiscriminate domestic animals, and for Friday afternoon there is a demonstration in front of the headquarters of the Liguria Region and the Municipality of Genoa. The garrison was convened by the Genoese animalists together with the association Fine of speciesism and the network of sanctuaries shouting “Hands off pigs and boars“. The request, addressed not only to the Liguria Region and the Municipality but also to the government, is to file the hypothesis of mass killing.
“No to mass killing”
«We ask that the settled wild boars of Bisagno have not been killed because it does not represent any danger for the pig farms present in the neighboring regions – the activists explain – We do not want a carnage of harmless and healthy animals to take place in front of the houses: as requested by thousands of citizens, if the problem is safety, they must containment nets be placed to prevent any leaks from the shore ».
Swine fever it is not transmitted to humans or other animalsonly among suidae, but the measures adopted are aimed at preserving in particular the livestock sector ea prevents the virus from leaving the borders of the two regions currently affected. Initially the ordinance with which the Liguria Region transposed the ministerial one also provided for the killing of domestic pigs like Tibetan and Vietnamese pigs, but in recent days, after constant mail-bombing and the wave of protests that has arisen, it has been made clear that pet pigs will not be culled, even if they live in outdoor pens. Another decision that has raised concerns and anger among the associations.
“Roberto Moschi, head of Alisa’s veterinary service, said that fattening or breeding animals are being killed but not those that are part of” other activities “- they explain – Specifying that” species such as the Tibetan or Vietnamese are safe, as long as that the owners keep the animals segregated at home, without any contact with other animals or, worse, with the woods “. And for whom did he save pigs other than those species? For those who take care of wild boars or hybrids, regularly registered and kept safely? What are the indications for which animals that cannot live inside an apartment can be considered “segregated”? ».
«What danger can the families of wild boars that live in the Bisagno area represent for the Lombard or Emilian farms? – continue the Genovese Animalists – to kill sedentary and healthy animals to protect activities that on the contrary can be a source of epidemics, as well as represent a daily massacre of innocent beings? We cannot stand still in front of this umpteenth horror, this unacceptable act of anthropocentric arrogance ».
EU commissioners expected in Piedmont and Liguria
Next week, in the meantime, three European Union inspectors should arrive in Piedmont and Liguria to verify that the protocols envisaged at Community level for outbreaks of swine fever are respected, while the TAR of Liguria has yet to rule on the appeal presented by a pig farmer from Campo Ligure who blocked the slaughter. The goal remains that of adopting all necessary measures to prevent swine fever from being transmitted to farmed pigs (consequently also blocking the export), and to reach it, the two Regions stannondo also with the installation of nets and grids to contain wild boars in the woods, also patrolled by volunteer hunters.
The Ministry of Health has already explained that from 2020 Italy, in consideration of the European epidemic and based on the strategy provided for in the context of the Community for the prevention and control of African swine fever, has drawn up a national surveillance plan, which it also includes a part dedicated solely to Sardinia relating to measures aimed at achieving eradication.
The Plan belt is presented annually to the European Commission for approval and expected co-financing, and as required by EU regulations, from the confirmation of the positive outcome of the member concerned 90 days a specific eradication plan for the European Commission.
