the number of patients in care is increasing slightly, the increase in admissions seems to be slowing down
When will Belgium reach the peak of the Omicron wave? It’s hard to say with a testing capacity on the verge of complete saturation and a tracing that has given up, which means that we only test symptomatic patients and that almost one in two tests is positive .
However, several signs are recommended:
- the peak of contamination seems to have been reached in Brussels, which had been the first region to be most affected by the Omicron variant. On January 25 and 26, the number of cases detected there is each time lower than that recorded for 7 days, and the average number of cases is therefore falling.
- the rate of increase in cases detected nationwide, which was still 77% two days ago, went back down to 45%. But it could be linked to this saturation of testing/tracing
- the rate of increase in admissions for Covidwho was from 51% 3 days ago, did he go back down to 31%. Admissions which seem to give more, according to the testimonies, more court stays than in previous waves.
The number of patients in care is intensifying, which had been in continuous decline for almost two months, caused a very slight increase, with 371 beds busy.
The consolidated figures of the Sciensano table
Cases detected¹ : between 19/01 and 25/01, 52294 new coronavirus infections have been detected on average every day. It is an increase of 45% compared to the previous week.
Trials : between 19/01 and 25/01, an average of 119.935 testing was done daily, a total up 31% from the previous week.
Admissions : they amount on average to 354.7 between 22/01 and 28/01. That’s a 31% increase from the previous week.
People hospitalized² : 3821 patients are currently hospitalized in connection with Covid-19, including 371 patients treated in care intensifies.
Positivity rate³ : based on the test results obtained between 19/01 and 25/01, it is 46.3%up 7.2% from last week.
Reproduction rate : calculated on the basis of the evolution of admissions, the Rt of the coronavirus is now established at 1.18. When it is greater than 1, it means that the transmission of the virus is accelerating.
Death : between 19/01 and 25/01, 25.3 people died on average from the virus. Since the start of the epidemic, 28,957 people have died from the coronavirus.
¹ Cases detected are the number of patients for whom a positive test confirmed the presence of the virus. The date that is considered is the date of the diagnosis, not the test result. The data is harmonized after 4 days. The number of cases may partly depend on the testing strategy: if we test more systematically, we also detect more cases.
² In hospitalized persons are reflected patients already hospitalized for another reason, and who have tested positive.
³ The positivity rate is the number of positive tests compared to the number of tests performed. The same person can be tested several times. It also depends on the testing strategy: if you don’t test enough, the positivity rate will be higher.
