Prague 7 has announced an international architectural competition, after 100 years it will build a new school – Cysnews
The city district of Prague 7 has announced an international architectural competition for a new primary school to be established in Holešovice. The school for almost 600 children will stand in Jankovcova Street and will be named after the recently deceased poet, musician and actor Jan Vodňanský. Domestic and foreign architects now have the opportunity to make history and design a new primary school after 100 years in Prague 7!
“We have been saying for a long time that open architectural competitions are to be announced for public buildings. In February, six years ago, we launched a competition for our new town hall, and now it will be two years since we sat in the beautiful citizens and experts award-winning building built according to the winning design. After 135 years, we acquired our own representative town hall, which has been determined by an architectural competition. We have shown that this is possible, and now we are giving architects another opportunity to be part of the history of the seventh district and to be the first to design a new primary school in our country after 100 years. ” said Mayor of Prague 7 Jan Čižinský.
The new school will be one of the first buildings that will determine the appearance of the newly emerging block of houses in Prague’s Holešovice.
In addition to the building itself, the competition also includes a proposal for modifications to the outdoor areas and the restoration of Přádelní Street for pedestrians, cyclists and the necessary supplies. The task of the competitions is to design a solution that, with reasonable economic costs for the construction and operation of the building, defines the meaningful urbanism of the place. The proposals to bring have a creative and cultivated architecture and fulfill the idea of a school for the 21st century, which will respect the current ecological, social and aesthetic demands.
“Most of the schools in which children at Sedmička still study were established at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, ideas about the role the school should play in a child’s life have changed a lot since then. We therefore take the task of planning a new school that will serve the children for perhaps another 100 years. In the preparatory phase of this project, we participated in a professional group composed of teachers, principals, but also other school staff or students from our Youth Council. They all help us define what we expect from the new school. The current pandemic clearly states that although children can be educated outside the school building, living together in a well-functioning, modern and friendly school is irreplaceable for them. ” she said Councilor of Prague 7 for Education Hana Šišková.
The open international architectural competition for the design of Jan Vodňanský Elementary School is conceived as a two-round one.
In the first round, the jury will select six finalists who will elaborate the original proposals in greater detail for the second round.
The deadlines for submitting proposals are in the 1st round on March 25, 2022, 2:00 p.m. Participants who advance to the 2nd round will submit their proposals by June 3, 2022, 14:00.
The evaluation will be undertaken by an international jury composed of representatives of the town hall and independent experts.
Detailed information and documents can be found at competition website.
The construction of the school is planned for the City Hall of Prague 7 in 2024. The estimated construction costs are CZK 500 million without tax.
