The Austrian domestic secret service warns of a radicalization and internationalization of the protests against the Corona measures. This development is “very, very scary,” said the head of the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN), Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, of the AFP news agency. In Austria, tens of thousands of people have regularly taken to the streets in recent weeks against the corona measures and the planned compulsory vaccination, which will come into force on February 4th.
Numerous foreign demonstrators, mainly from Germany and Switzerland, have joined the protests, said Haijawi-Pirchner. Many of the activists come from the right-wing scene and are “very strongly radicalized”. They used the demonstrations to spread their anti-Semitic ideology, meet with other right-wing extremists and build networks, the DSN boss said.
Protection zones around hospitals and vaccination centers
In Germany and other EU countries, too, thousands of opponents of the Corona measures are taking to the streets. Violent riots occur again and again. Haijawi-Pirchner said that in Austria there were numerous threats related to the “critical infrastructure” in the country.
This affects media, health facilities and politics, among others. The Austrian authorities had recently set up protection zones around hospitals and test and vaccination centers.
Haijawi-Pirchner is the first head of the newly established Directorate for State Security and Intelligence, which began work on December 1 as the successor authority to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism (BVT).
