End of the destruction of unsold clothing!
The ethical fashion minute with The Good Goods focuses this month on the AGEC law. In force since January 1, it is now prohibited for marks of destruction of unsold clothing. This practice was until then very validated!
Decryption with Victoire Satto, co-founder of The Good Goods.
Why destroy inventors?
The destruction of unsold consists of getting rid of parts that have not been purchased. As a result, brands will throw them away, bury them underground or incinerate them. To justify themselves, some brands evoke non-compliant quality, minor defects, even stains and tears. In reality, as Victoire explains, the majority of the clothes destroyed correspond to the inventors. Today, 40% of products do not find takers. It is now a practice prohibited by the AGEC law (Anti-Waste for the Circular Economy)
The AGEC law: what is it?
This law was voted in the National Assembly and in the Senate. Its mission: to accelerate the change in the production and consumption model to limit waste and simultaneously preserve natural resources, biodiversity and the climate. Thus, since January 1, 2022, the fashion and luxury industry has prohibited the destruction of clothing. Producers, importers and distributors will have to donate, reuse, reuse or recycle their unsold products.
Countering overproduction: a major challenge!
Overproduction is a universal problem. The AGEC law thus forces brands to change models. They can for example focus on eco-design. The goal is to produce a garment that can easily be recycled or upcycled at the end of its life.
There is also the pre-order which makes it possible to produce the right quantity. We also think of the second-hand circular system which is also growing.
Overproduction is a scourge but so is overconsumption. Consumers can act on their scale by avoiding impulse purchases at a frantic pace. Because it is clear that the least polluting garment is the one that has never been produced.
