Brussels MP will convert €66,000 salary into bitcoin in 2022
Christophe De Beukelaer will have monthly salary payment in bitcoin this year. He sits in the Belgian parliament of Brussels for the cdH and wants to draw attention to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin standard
De Beukelaer receives his salary in euros and allows them to be used in bitcoin at the Belgian broker Bit4you. As a Member of Parliament in the Brussels-Capital Parliament, he earns €5,500 per month. He is said to be the first European politician to come to the fore in this way as a bitcoiner.
The 35-year-old from Brussels has a clear goal in mind with the action.
“It is the politician’s role to make the public aware of these societal changes that are coming. We can no longer remain ignorant of this new world!” he writes on his own website. “It’s a bit like clinging to the carriage of candles as cars and burning arise. Adoption will be exponential.”
Brussels as Bitcoin City
De Beukelaer has mobility in his portfolio for the Christian Democrats and is now also showing himself to be an advocate for the adoption of cryptocurrencies. He would like to see Brussels develop into an “ecosystem” for the crypto industry in Europe. With this action, he wants to show that it is possible to live on bitcoin. It is a call to see the opportunities of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. And by extension, he calls for “a deep reflection on our monetary system.”
This promotion of Brussels is the European regional take on what Eric Adams and Francis Suarez are doing in the US with New York and Miami. Whether Belgium will play a pioneering role in the field of bitcoin has yet to be announced. In any case, De Beukelaere puts himself and Bit4you in the spotlight with some firm.
