The Netherlands more than expects a billion euros less EU corona support
That is what finance minister Sigrid Kaag writes in a letter to the House of Representatives. The amount is lower because the Dutch economy was hit less hard by the corona crisis than initially thought: the economy did not shrink by 5.3 percent, but by 3.8 percent.
Own assessment
The amount that the Netherlands will receive partly depends on the coming contraction figures. Incidentally, it is not necessarily an estimate of the Dutch government and it is not yet established how much the Netherlands will ultimately receive. It will not be known definitively until the end of June on what amount the Netherlands can count on.
Other countries, for example, already have plans to get the billions in corona. “The Netherlands has not yet done so because there was no cabinet yet,” says political reporter Roel Schreinemachers. “Kaag said in Brussels last week that they want to do that before the summer.”
Small advantage
A lucky break: “Because the Netherlands had no plans to spend the billions from the emergency fund, they do not need to be adjusted now,” says Schreinemachers. “If you get less than expected, it is of course much greater if you already had a destination for those billions. The long formation still has one small advantage.”
