The Eternal Rome of Fendi – Lazio parades in Paris

The sense of the classic and the divine in revisited peplums and chasubles

(ANSA) – ROME, JAN 27 – Eternal Rome, the spirituality of Rome, celestial Rome, a city that never ceases to inspire the creative director of Fendi women’s lines, Kim Jones, who once again, for his new haute couture collection that showed in Paris, has thought of the historic capital. Crossing the layers of Roman temporality, from its ancient past to its imaginary future, for spring 2022 Kim Jones presents a Fendi Couture collection that draws on fantasy and reality to land in an otherworldly present.

Here, the historical codes of the city, its statuary marbles and ecclesiastical aesthetics, are explored in a futuristic setting. In the parade, the models look like gods descended from heaven, indeed from Olympus. They are an army of empresses, whose divine purity is imbued with celestial power. The house’s craftsmanship is applied to their futuristic silhouettes. Peplums and priestly chasubles are reinterpreted giving rise to very modern outfits, of one-shoulder dresses, of capes decorated with relief embroidery, which incorporate curls, scrolls, acanthus flowers and Baroque architectural motifs. Elsewhere, ceremonial asceticism superimposed on astral fantasy. Fluid and luminous fabrics are draped over shimmering bodies. Baguette beads of light decorate edges or entire dresses, making them similar to jewels. The female figures are otherworldly, charged with transcendent energy. Drawing on ancient techniques along with modern craftsmanship, the collection materially reflects that sentiment, finding harmony between past and present. The ghostly shadows of opulent fabrics, photographed and distorted, are printed on duchess silk and organza and illuminated with traditional beads and mother of pearl, while the classical statues located outside the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana by Fendi are hand painted in dramatic chiaroscuro on mink veneer and velvet. Thermoformed leathers, embroidered with micro sequins, mink and pearls, echo Corinthian reliefs; the visible bases reveal the very essence of couture: its construction. (HANDLE).
